Track bikes
« on: 08/08/07 08:23AM »
Anybody looking to build a track bike? Since my CB350 project is now swirling the crapper and about to flush, I was looking at this as a project for a track bike. Should have enough power to be fast, but not get me killed right away.

I saw some tech info someplace on it, but can't remeber where. Talked about safety wire, and what you need. The good news is you don't put lights or mirrors on it anyway, so no need to tape anything.

But if i buy a bike that has that, since i'm not building it from scratch, i still have to tape up headlights and take off the mirrors, right?

Depends. If you want it for JUST the track, remove all that stuff and leave it off. Another trick I learned about was getting spare lenses and painting the inside and outside of it black so no light shines through, then remove the bulb. That way you don't have to clean tape off later, you just swap the lens and re-install the bulbs when your done.

wow, you know the insides and out.  So basically I have to trailer the bike up to the track then, if I do all the preping, cuz it won't be street legal.

Yeah, but in all honesty, trailering it means you don't worry about dumping it on your way in, you can carry extra supplies (spare wheels, oil/fuel/coolant, fuses, spare parts, food, comfortable clothes for when your NOT riding, etc) and you can run a wide-open exhaust and make a real beast out of it.

This bike will not be a street bike, it will stay a track bike.

Then you have to trailer it anyway. No prob. Besides, dropping it means you didn't kill your ride bike and can fix it at your leisure. Trust me, I spend a lot of time fixing crashes......

I have some money set aside for other mods and stuff too. I was looking for tires, but what do you think about ordering them online? Most have free shipping. Cuz when I go to moto shops, either they don't have one available .

Usually ends up about the same from what I can see, after you get them mounted. The places I go (Hams-Newport, Spectrum, Mission) usually give me a 10% discount anyway, so it depends on if they have em in stock or not. Shopping around is never bad. Remember, every $5 you save is a beer you can buy ME!!  :D
