How do you heal road rash without scarring?
« on: 09/02/09 09:53PM »
I have road rash on both of my forearm (The day that I didn't wear a jacket, I go down), looks like second degree burn, a rash over my tattoo.  Any of you ever had road rash and how did it heal? If you managed to get it to heal without any scarring, how did you do it?

For those that want to know what happened, I took a tumble today on my 636. Lowsided at the traffic circle in Long Beach on my way to Cal State long beach, I ended up missing class and a day of work. Leaning too far with cold tires contributed to it, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility that maybe gravel took me out during my lean. Bike complete fairing is toast, bent sub-frame, broken gear shift, air duct snapped, bent rear sprocket, radiator hose leaking, kickstand kill switch broke off. Managed to get the bike up and running street fighter style when I got it towed home. Looks like It'll cost me at least $900 to get it back to how it was.... but overall I'm just glad that i rolled onto grass after my first contact with concrete, it could have been worst.

ill be back on the road, but for now.... carpooling and this will be my ride...

two wheels is two wheels...  ;D

My brother sizzled himself opening a radiator that blew up in his face. He applied every day until it was heal completely. He didn't have any scarring. I can't guarentee it, but it worked out well for him and myself.

me personaly... iv never had any scarring from road rash, and iv had more the my fair share of it. iv had road rash over my tats also and still my tats look good. but everyone heals different. i have a friend who's a type 1 diabetic and doesnt heal up so well and has more scars the i can count.

+1 on the Vitamin E oil
maybe also try using neosporin after youve cleaned out the rash using rubbing alchol.
sorry to hear about your crash.

A nurse at the ER told me to use aloe.
Where I had 2nd degree style road rash, the scarring is starting to go away after 3 months.

there is a topical gel formulated for scars.  it's called mederma.  they say it helps scars appear softer and smoother.  claims that money back if you don't see improved color, texture, appearance or flexibility of the scar you get your money back.
i feel like a freakin' billy mays here.  i have a small sample pack from about 11 years ago.  may not even be around anymore.  anyway, no web site listed, but you could do one of those there google searches.  or 888.925.8989

and if you act in the next 15 minutes you get this ginsu knive set...
are you laughing, cause i'm crackin' myself up

My method. Scrub it clean, alcohol works best. Make sure you don't have any gravel/asphalt chunks in the wound, otherwise you'll end up with that shit coming to a head and pushing its way out a few months down the road (ask me how I know, ouch)

Don't let it scab up, keep it clean and coated with NeoSporin. I prefer the big tube of the Walgreen's/CVS brand that is thick, clear gel and not the white creamy crap.

I usually would take a shower, scrub it with soap and loofa-thingy. Get out of shower, coat with Neo. Midway through day when you see scabby crap/crusties, etc. hit it with Peroxide and re-Neo. Just keep it lubed up and you'll be good to go...

Funny! Yet we preach to prevent it!
I have road rash on both of my forearm (The day that I didn't wear a jacket, I go down)

Thats what I worry about. The one time I don't wear my jacket is prolly the one time I'll regret it and it only takes one time!

I'm quite the Feces Magnet. I could jump a school bus in leathers and not hurt myself if I tried, put me in a T-shirt, and I'll lose it backing out of the garage.

I can't remember the name of the burn cream but I got some years ago from the doctors office... cream had a semi metallic look and it worked wonders...Applied daily but as the thread says you have to keep it moist. As soon as it drys out it will start to get hard and dry. It also matters how well you cleaned it afterwads...very painful but at the hospital they scrub it with a brush to get rid of the foriegn matter that the skin also scares around. So if this just happened you may need to clean it better instead of just rinsing it off.

Best of luck, scares typically still happen in that kind of accident... Sorry to hear about it...

Hope you are back on the road again soon safetly...An yes two wheels are two wheels but you're a little low on horsepower  ;)

Neosporin works well to reduce the chance of infection. That's priority 1, and infection will makes things really bad so keep it clean.

Also, Vitamin E works well. Try to find the stuff prego women use for stretch marks, it's mostly Vitamin E and Cocoa Butter.

Finally some knowledge I can share from having too many kids. Key thing is to keep it clean first and foremost.

Dude!  U need WAY better or more frame/swingarm sliders & long bar ends. Most of the time I lowside I only break my gear shift lever.

For the scaring Vitamin A&D ointment is the absolute BEST thing u can put on it. Get a TUB not a squeeze tube and use it ALL THE time. It coats and helps prevent infection too.  It stinks like ass but saves like Jesus... I cann it "JesusAss Creame"
